Beggars belief

If as people we ignore those suffering around us using the excuse of being to busy to notice them or too fearful of failing in the attempt, what does that say about our love and compassion for our fellow man. But then at times we ask what can we do when those suffering will not help themselves or refuse help? I have seen in my town at least 3 or 4 men sitting by the shops. They do not beg, though they clearly live rough but rather hope for handouts. Many people oblige with drink and food as well as money. Yet they still return even though a church is close by. The well intentioned handouts do not affect change they just buy time. Handouts can be seen as compassionate offerings or as an appeasing of guilt. Either way more needs to be done. This kind of occurrence really should not occur in wealthy advanced nations but they do and it demonstrates a failure by society and a failure of the system. Society as a whole needs to do more to stop people falling through the cracks. Society and the system should offer more equality and greater fairness, reducing the gap between the haves and have nots. I would never say no to Handouts or help for those most in need but it does not change or address the issues but simply offers a temporary fix. We as people need when seeing people living rough to demand answers why from their local authority and demand they help and do more to stop this or to offer more long term help than just expecting people to be generous enough to help or guilty enough to help. Society and the establishment has lost all sense of compassion while hoarding money and rewarding themselves working within it big salaries. There is enough to go around for all but only if shared on what we need and not based on greed.
