A winters night,
a lantern pierces the night,
voices singing carols puncture the air
in shrill abandon.
Windows illuminated by flickering lights
exuding warmth,
and luxurious delight.
Snow covered paths,
cold is the night,
not everyone will sleep in comfort tonight.
In doorways, boxes and alleyways
some will make it a place to stay,
to shelter from the harsh mid winter
no happy holiday or hallelujah,
just a struggle for survival
and a hope of some care,
from the soup kitchens
and those who work there.
So as we celebrate the season of goodwill,
think of those beyond your windowsill,
think of those living out in the cold at nights
think of them and remember their plight,
that there for the grace of god go we in light,
and share some compassion on this Christmas night.
