It should never have happened there
It was because those who make decisions don’t care,
So they ended up in a smoke filled room
This room, their home became their doom.
Told stay and you will be ok,
No need to try to escape,
Could not even if they wanted too,
Trapped in a towering inferno,
No hope of escape so they rang and texted their love ones
Said their tearful, fearful goodbyes
God rest them.
This didn’t even need to happen
It just follows a familiar pattern,
That no one cares about the poor,
Representation they can’t afford
And so for years they were ignored,
Now many are no longer here,
Having passed away,
Killed by the system, killed by the state
That gave them no option,
But to live in this dangerous place.
And those who kept them there,
Will shed a few crocodile tears,
While many in similar situations
Will continue to live in these places,
And they will also have to live in fear
And the tears of the loved ones,
They are truly real
And will never overcome the grief
Or the pain that they feel.
Imagine if that was your family in there,
Imagine your total despair,
Imagine being that unable to help,
Then imagine it’s all because nobody cared,
Then you may understand the rage,
Understand the venting of the pain,
The need for somebody to pay
I am not surprised about this in any way.
Yet all I can think about,
Are the families dying,
Hard to think about that,
Without crying,
The poor little children
Who suffered for no need,
Except for that same old reason,
Grenfall was the defning moment of societies greed over need.
Yet all I can think about,
Are the people dying,
Hard to think about that,
Without crying.
