Meditation 

I hear people speak of meditation as if it has certain rules governing it. 1. Sitting get in lotus position 2. Quiet room 3. Eyes closed.

However the way I heard it was 1. Sit comfortably any way is OK 2. Any environment is OK 3. Eyes open. 

The reasons being is comfortable sitting extends time meditating, just ensure back straight head up for helping the chakra flow. Next environment, for if you can meditate with noises around you and can still shut it out, then you have truly mastered the art. Finally eyes open is again important for character flow as it allows energy to flow in and out through the eyes. Ideally jaw should be slack and mouth slightly open to for the same purpose. Also important is by keeping eyes open, you remain aware of what is happening around you and ensures that you remain in meditation and not in sleep.

Meditation is largely as I understand mindfulness and this can be done at anytime, anywhere. I practice mindfulness whilst walking, working at my pc at work when stress builds. I find it amazing that many feel mindfulness and meditation requires certain conditions and environments as well as time.

Maybe I have it wrong but I’d love to hear peoples thoughts on this. Namaste and much love to all.

See dear,Meditation is a state to be in and not an act as explained by Sadhguru..and that state is state of bliss..so whatever way you feel at blissful,do that way..however there are certain postures which help your body become more receptive of cosmic energy and hence attaining that state of bliss becomes relatively easier..for example , I practice Aumkar meditation ,about which I have written here.. https://the-passport-souls.travel.blog/2017/04/29/learn-extremely-effective-meditation-technique-in-just-4-minutes/….   2. I read a lot about meditation years ago and tried different kind of meditation and, for me, I can’t meditate with noise! I suffer from noise sensitivity and other health problems so everytime I try to meditate and I hear dogs barking or furniture being dragged or hammering it drives me insane, not to talk that my anxiety becomes unbearable; With this I want to say that I used to meditate with music in the past and it worked just fine for me but due to all the things I described is actually almost impossible to meditate with extreme noise (in my case and where I live) and when you are with excruciating pains. So even the monks in Japan need silence and peace to meditate..

    1. The key is we are all unique and individual and so what ever works for you is good. There is no wrong or right way just your way. Really glad to receive your feedback on this.

  3. My feeling… it’s a state of being.. comes with focused growth in cultivating the want, feeling the thirst, knowing its possibility. Carving out time to singularly meditate accelerates the ability to carry the ‘mindfulness’ through out ones journeys in life …

  4. Meditation can come in the form of taking a walk in nature. Or sitting or laying. But I see it as a way to quiet the mind. So any way that you come to peacefulness is right in my book!

  5. We should never forget that within meditation we sure the body as a tool. The Tibetans have a story, it goes as follows: the body and mind are like two stones tied together with a string, throw one and the other will follow. And since most of us have no idea how to calm mind we must first start with the body. Proper posture is very important in all levels of meditation beginner or advanced, and especially when or if some advanced breathing exercises come into play. We cannot ignore the fact that people have been sitting in full lotus for thousands of years and not because it is comfortable, it keeps us not just awake but alert and completely present, even if it is with sore legs. Meditation is not just a feel good thing it is an active balancing between the body and mind/ total alertness and relaxation. There are many yoga postures that can help one prepare for sitting if one has the time and patience.
    But the main thing is to meditate no matter how, even if your in a wheelchair just do your best.
    And open eyes are great to increase clarity, closed eyes help one understand emptiness. Try both, and enjoy.

  6. First you are not at all wrong…. Nobody is wrong in expressing what they say.
    When we are not doing anything the energy moves towards the center, it settles down towards the center. When we are doing something the energy moves out. Doing is a way of moving out. Non-doing is a way of moving in. This non doing is meditation, when we are with ourselves and aware we are in meditation.

  7. I for example can only meditate laying down (at least that’s all I’ve managed so far). No, I don’t fall asleep but I get to relax without worrying about any parts of my body being uncomfortable. I think each individual should try different ways before finding the one suited for him.

  8. Yep I agree with you …personally I was taught to be ‘mindful’ of the raising and lowering of arms when laid flat on my back ( couldn’t sit comfortably at the time) ..eyes closed …arms moving in rhythm to breath …gradually slowing movement till focussing on the breath only

    There are a number of methods of meditation …this one worked for me and I still do it 20 mins a day but sat in a comfortable cross legged position ….don’t need to do the arm thing any more …just close eyes …tune into breath …and let go …if ‘thought’ comes in …let it …but just stay focussed on the breath underneath …eventually ‘thought’ stops so you get a few minutes reprieve …better than sleep really:)
