He climbed out of his car
and saw her standing waiting for him
walking over with a swagger swinging his keys on his fingers
he looked her up and down.
‘That top, it’s not you, stripes don’t suit you’.
Her smile she was wearing at the pleasure of seeing him faded.
Disappointment took it’s place as she suddenly felt chastised.
‘Maybe it’s because your hair is messy and too much make up’,
he continued with out any thought of her feelings.
‘Well, are we going for a drink or what!’
He said pushing his face closer into hers in a menacing manner.
‘No’, she said finally almost in a whisper, almost afraid to look him in they eye.
‘Why not!’, he snapped back,
‘because I just realised that I am worth more than you show me,
and if you think me not good enough then we are done’.
She spoke these words with all the force and resolve she could muster.
angrily her boyfriend with a snarl on his face retorted,
‘you ain’t nothing without me and you are mine, get it!’,
She backed away from his aggressive posture and turned and walked away
replying as she went, ‘I’d rather be nothing than be under your control.
I am better than you deserve and I deserve better. From now on only I control me’.
She kept walking, he stood opened his arms wide ‘Come on babe! you know me,
it’s all just banter’.
But she kept walking and never looked or went back. In that moment
she felt the relief and joy of freedom that she was denied when with him.
Never be bullied.
Never be controlled.
