We watched as the rains came

During the winter the rain came

After a summer which bleached our Earth,

And as we watched as the rainfell

Washing away the parched dirt

And we looks to the skies at the dark clouds,

Black, foreboding and full of doom,

We knew that rains would be heavy

We knew that the rain would come soon.

As it poured down in torrents with high winds,

The rivers and streams rose up

And as the rain and the strong winds were mounting,

Into preternaural gusts,

We fought trying to build up defences

Using sandbags to hold rivers back,

But like old King Canute found to his folly

Holding back the tides are something we truly lack

And as the streets were turned into rivers,

And possessions and building flowed by,

As the roads and the infrastructure started breaking up over time,

We watched the rain in utter futility

As the floods flushed our lives down the drain,

Well at least they say it was right to ignore

Those who predicted climate change.

As you sit there watching the rains come

Comfort yourself in that ignorant bliss

And as it gets worse and you’re shown to be wrong,

Then how will you explain such ignorance to your kids.
