Growing up

I remember waking up on cold winter mornings,

Clearing the coal from the fire place,

Replacing it with new coals and lighting it up

Warming the house up seemed to take an age,

I remember watching TV there were only two channels

Black and white picture that used to roll,

So you’d hit the top and hit the sides

And there were no such things like remote controls,

The grocer van would visit the street every day

My mum brought goods and promised to pay another day,

He would write it down and say that’s ok

There was trust back in the day,

There were people in vans selling candy floss

Toffee apples that I loved the most,

The paraffin man with the coal man

Everything you needed right at hand,

back in the day it was simpler then, not a lot of money

But there was very little debt,

You had to make do with what you had

And I had very little but the love of a good mum and dad,

Who are no gone and that’s so sad,

But they live on in my memories

Of days of old, in an age of gold,

And white Christmases and long hot summers,

Or was that just a dream rather than just a memory.
