A requiem for Archie Battersbee

Life is precious and should be fought for

Who stands up for those who are unable to speak,

People in coma’s and on life support

When money dictates the end life via courts,

Doctors dictating when the machines get turned off

Unless you’re rich and wealthy, then it’s different of course,

Why are they so eager to call life extinct

When there may be a glimmer of hope of treatment in other countries ,

And why shouldn’t the loved ones and families

Have the right to decide where the end of their loved ones who suffer these tragedies,

Should be spent, it’s ridiculous how easy

It is for us to lose our rights and liberties,

When we suffer an accident and can’t speak

Yet you get ill and try to decide to go down the route of euthanasia you’ll see,

They will say that’s illegal too so please explain to me

How courts, doctors and governments can decree,

We no longer have the right or equalities

And that suddenly we or our caring families,

No longer have the freedom or abilities

To make any decisions, this is crazy,

The time to decide when our time is up is something I believe,

Should rest solely with us and our loved ones intrinsically

Based on a balance of what is right clinically or emotionally,

And no where in the equation should it be rooted in money

Which we all know is the truth essentially,

I can’t understand why the parents of Archie Battersbee

Can’t have the final say over their son exclusively,

It’s a fucking disgrace if you ask me

They created his life and cared for him passionately,

So the system should treat this more humanely

And allow them to make decisions and abide by their wishes compassionately,

They shouldn’t be forced under the dictate of authority

To give up all hope on him because the state decides unequivocally,

This is the sign of how little rights we have in our society

When authority overrides how we choose to fucking live and breathe,

Let’s stand up for the rights of Archie and his family.
