It must be so hard
Being young these days,
So much information
Flooding in the brain,
Infecting them
Through news and social media,
Should I choose a side
Which battles should I fight,
Am I gay or am I straight
Is a question they must ask
Am I make or am I female
Or do I wear another mask,
This has got to be hard,
When I was young
There was no internet,
And no mobile phones,
And no social media
And I was not alone,
We embraced the great outdoors
And played lots of different games,
I think life was easier
And happier back in the day,
Now young people have to face
Information overloads,
Subjected to bullying and hate
From people they don’t even know,
We see racism growing exponentially
Trolling, death threats now are a common spectacle it seems,
I can’t help thinking maybe these discoveries were not so good,
I must be hard for young people
Who like, through history have been misunderstood
But at least there is a chance for young people to connect,
To unify and help each other and that’s the best
But I can’t help feeling, despite the host of positives
There is an insidious amount of stuff that is negative,
And the negative stuff sticks more I find
Than all the positives and likes,
It must be hard being young these days
Being forced to decide,
Stuff we let wash over us back in the day
And we didn’t have to suffer the pollution of the brain we see today.
