Days of yore

I wish that I could travel back in time
embark on many different journeys,
along the saffron road ,
following caravans,
filled with spices,
filled with silks,
bartering prices.

A tough life probably not as exotic as it sounded
travelling from town to town on foot and camels
in trains that were astounding.
Through the day under the hot sun
threatening to bleach you very bones
at night under canvas
so cold you feel you could have froze.

The sun dried leather looking faces
of those people who were trading
were skilled in sales of exotic things
and at stalls they loved parading,
everything that anybodies heart could desire
musicians, monks and beggars joined this unholy choir.
Looking to make riches or survive another day
monks were there to off those a chance to kneel and simply pray.

There stalls of many colors offering spices from the world
brilliantly aggrandized stalls
of silks and cloths for boys and girls,
dancers danced with scarfs and spun around
pirouetting throwing twirls.
A sight to see I am sure of that
within a cacophony of sound
the sand and dust whipping up a cloud
from the barren drought like ground.

I wish I could have seen the Arabian Knights as they rode by
as people stood in awe of them
in their power, and their might.
Skilled warriors of ancient times,
made up of tales, myths,legends,
a truly wondrous world to see
but those days have sadly ended.
Now the journeys of those people
have been resigned to tales of yore,
but i’d give almost anything,
to see it all once more.
