Went to town
It’s so multicultural,
Different languages
Different skins,
Different ways
And different religions,
This diverse society
Shows the way,
Of how we can all get along
No animosity just people being tolerant,
Sharing the same space
But in our own ways,
This is diversity on display.
It’s eye-opening travelling to somewhere unfamiliar and seeing new people – with different skins and different cultures, isn’t it. I love your poem about it. It reminds me of being in Bali when I was in my late teens. Obviously I thought everything was ‘boring’ and was feeling quite sorry for myself at the time. I looked up and suddenly saw two small children riding one old, dilapidated bicycle. The older child (maybe 10 years old?) balanced his brother/friend (maybe 5 years old?) on his lap and as he pedalled, he would yell out “HONK!” to people who would jump out of the way and make the 5-year-old laugh. They were having the time of their lives in their tatty, worn clothing and stick-thin bodies that probably didn’t experience a full meal that often…and that humbled me. No more complaining from then about the “embarrassing holiday” (I thought my parents were embarassing – how wrong I was). Travelling to other countries makes us grateful for what we have xx
